I don’t know about you, but I use movies as therapy. I want a little stimulation and adrenaline, a good suspenseful movie is what I will choose. If I am on the verge of tears and want a release, nothing like a good sappy movie to do the trick. Even if I want to feel connected to others in similar situations, I sometimes turn to movies. There is nothing like wanting to connect or feel understood, however, and ending up with a dud.
Films about people with mental health diagnoses can be especially disappointing. Portrayed as violent or incompetent in all regards, I can feel my sense of self slipping. That is why we have chosen to give you two different lists. While there is some overlap between the two, one list is movies that portray mental health diagnoses in a realistic light, and the other those that inspire. By the way, you may find that your inspiration comes from different places than it did before your diagnosis. My inspiration used to come from people’s achievements, now I am moved by others kindness, perseverance, and ability to change.
So, grab some popcorn, a good friend and a warm comforter and enjoy the show…
